A cottage on piers has its floor open to the air on all sides. In January the floor is the same temperature as the yard, the water lines under it freeze, and no amount of heat in the room fixes it. Closed cell spray foam insulation sprayed to the underside of the floor, between the joists and over the plumbing, seals and insulates the whole surface in one pass and does not sag, absorb water or feed mice the way batts and board do. It also carries the depth a snowbelt roof needs in a rafter that was never deep enough for batts.
